Team New Zealand has delivered a historic performance on the global stage, capturing the Team Challenge Championship title at the 3rd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI 2026), held at the Kazakh National University of Sports (KNUS).

Running from August 2 to August 8, 2026, this year’s Olympiad gathered about 471 of the world’s brightest young minds representing more than 108 countries. Competing in a high-stakes environment, the brilliant four-member New Zealand delegation proved their mettle against elite global competition through months of rigorous preparation, deep collaboration, and sheer technical endurance.

A Masterclass in Team Strategy and Debugging

The pinnacle of Team New Zealand's campaign came during the intense team challenge track. Facing complex, multi-layered machine learning and problem-solving obstacles, the team executed a flawless strategy built on months of meticulous preparation.

After navigating four gruelling rounds of heavy debugging and intense pressure, Team New Zealand made a massive statement by becoming the very first team to successfully complete Galbot Task 1. Their sustained momentum carried them through to finish with a phenomenal score of 127 out of 130 across the two primary tasks, earning them the undisputed gold standard of the team competition and the championship title.
